Money 20/20 ’26 Roll-Up: Identity Verification Has to Do More Than Catch Fraud

Three days at The Venetian reinforced something I already believed: identity verification is no longer a single checkpoint. It sits at the center of the FinTech workflow, and it now answers to three teams at once. Fraud needs it to stop bad actors. Compliance needs it to stand up to scrutiny. Growth needs it to stay out of the customer’s way. The conversations at our booth and across the expo floor made clear that buyers now expect all three from a single solution.

‍

Fraud: AI Is Breaking Legacy Defenses

‍

The fraud conversation has changed fast. Generative AI has driven the cost of producing convincing fakes close to zero. A fraudster can generate a synthetic face, pair it with a high-quality counterfeit license, and present both in minutes. Deepfakes, face swaps, and injection attacks were recurring themes across the agenda, and none of them are hypothetical anymore.

‍

That shift exposes the weakness of legacy template-based systems. Those tools compare an ID image against a library of known layouts, checking whether fonts, holograms, and field positions look right. But looking right is exactly what AI does best. When a fake can be rendered pixel for pixel, a visual template match becomes a coin flip.

‍

This is where our message landed. All fakes scan, but not all fakes pass. A counterfeit can carry a perfectly readable barcode. Reading that data proves nothing. Validating it against issuer standards, the way Intellicheck analyzes the PDF417 barcode, catches the fakes that fool both the human eye and template-based software.

‍

Compliance: Confidence You Can Document

‍

Fraud prevention is only part of the job. Compliance teams carry KYC, AML, and audit obligations, and they need verification results they can trust, explain, and retrieve. A pass or fail that cannot be traced back to clear evidence creates as much risk as it removes.

‍

Several visitors described compliance teams still reconciling manual reviews and inconsistent records across channels. Strong IDV should make their work easier, not add to it. That means consistent results across digital and in-person channels and a clear record of every check.

‍

Growth: Speed Is Not Optional

‍

Then there is the customer. People are less patient than ever, and cart abandonment remains a front and center concern for every growth leader I spoke with. Every extra second, retake, or manual review step in onboarding is a chance for a good customer to walk away and open an account somewhere else.

‍

The tension is real. Many organizations have been forced to choose between tighter security and a smoother experience. The buyers I met are done accepting that tradeoff. They want verification that runs in seconds, approves legitimate customers without friction, and reserves step-up checks for the transactions that warrant them.

‍

The DESKO Demo: All Three at the Counter

‍

Our joint demo with DESKO showed what that balance looks like in the physical channel. Together we debuted a prototype DESKO PENTA 4X scanner with an integrated biometric camera, connected to Intellicheck’s identity verification service using our latest Desktop plug-and-play application.

‍

A customer presents an ID at a teller window or retail counter. The scanner captures the document and the integrated camera captures the customer’s face for comparison against the credential photo. In seconds, staff know whether the document is authentic and whether the person in front of them is its rightful owner.

‍

That single workflow serves all three teams. Fraud gets document authentication plus a biometric match that defeats stolen and borrowed IDs. Compliance gets a consistent, recorded result instead of a judgment call made by eye. Growth gets a check that finishes before the customer notices it happened.

‍

What Comes Next

‍

I left Las Vegas convinced the IDV conversation has matured. The question is no longer whether a solution catches fraud. It is whether that solution catches AI-generated fraud, satisfies compliance, and keeps customers moving at the same time. Template-based approaches will struggle on the first count, and slow, high-friction flows will fail on the last.

‍

Thank you to everyone who stopped by Booth 14106, and to our partners at DESKO for an outstanding collaboration. If we did not connect in Las Vegas, let’s talk about how the right verification layer can protect your business, support your compliance team, and help you grow.
