Credit Unions Are Winning at Digital Adoption — and Still Losing Members

Digital adoption is up across the credit union industry. But a closer look at the data reveals a problem — and a real growth opportunity.

New research from Cornerstone Advisors puts a sobering number on what's actually happening beneath those adoption gains. According to their 2026 Digital Banking Performance Metrics report — based on data from 89 financial institutions including 57 credit unions — for every digital checking account successfully opened in 2025, institutions lost an average of 3.36 applications to abandonment. At the 75th percentile, institutions are losing more prospective members than they're converting. That’s nearly 9,000 potential accounts missed per institution, per year.

This is not a marketing problem. And it’s not a digital adoption problem. The report is clear about the culprits: identity verification friction and mid-flow device switching are driving members away before a relationship ever begins.

The Costly Dropoff Problem

Here's why this number deserves more attention than it's getting.

Credit unions have spent years — and significant budget — building out digital channels. 87% of checking account holders were active digital banking users in 2025, up from 85% the year prior. Mobile banking engagement is surging. Digital consumer loan applications hit 51% of all applications last year, the highest in the study's history. By almost every adoption metric, the industry is moving to online engagement.

And yet the pipeline is leaking. Three applications abandoned for every one completed. That's not a funnel — that's a filter. And what the data tells us is that in many cases, the choke point is identity verification.

This is the part of the conversation that gets uncomfortable, because most institutions assume their IDV process is fine. It's there, it works, people get verified. What they're not measuring is how many people don't make it through — and why.

When "Good Enough" Turns Applicants Away

When credit union leaders discuss their member onboarding experience, the conversation usually focuses on the front end: the application flow, the mobile experience, the marketing that drove someone there in the first place. Identity verification gets treated as a back-end compliance checkbox, necessary but not a growth lever.

That framing is costing memberships.

Template-based and OCR verification methods — still common in the market — read what's on the surface of an ID. They can struggle with document variations across states, create false positives that flag legitimate members, and frequently require applicants to switch devices or restart the flow entirely when something doesn't parse correctly. Each of those moments is a chance for a prospective member to give up and close the tab.

At Intellicheck, our approach is different. Rather than reading the surface of an ID, we analyze the authoritative barcode format embedded by the state DMV — data that is inaccessible to counterfeiters and invisible to template-based tools. That means 99.975% decisioning, negligible false positives, and a verification experience that is integrated seamlessly into your product and doesn't interrupt the workflow. Legitimate members get through instantly. Bad actors don't.

The result: fewer abandoned applications, not because we made verification easier to bypass, but because we made it fast and accurate for the people who deserve to be approved.

The Branch Side of the Equation

Digital onboarding gets most of the attention, but abandonment isn't the only place credit unions are leaving growth on the table. In-branch verification carries its own friction — manual ID checks that slow down the teller line, visual inspection that can't catch today's sophisticated fakes, and inconsistent processes that create compliance exposure across locations.

The member who walks into a branch deserves the same seamless experience as the one who opens an account on a phone at midnight. That consistency is what builds trust — not just in the transaction, but in the institution. It also matters for KYC, AML, and BSA compliance, where a centralized, auditable record of every verification is no longer optional.

What Changes When You Get This Right

The math isn't complicated. If a credit union recovered even a fraction of those 8,904 missed accounts per year, the growth impact would be significant — and the investment to get there doesn't require a rip-and-replace IT overhaul. Intellicheck typically deploys in under two weeks, works with your existing hardware, and requires minimal staff retraining.

In our conversations with credit union leaders, identity verification friction is almost always part of the story — they just didn't know it until they looked at where members were dropping off. The good news is that it's also one of the fastest things to fix.

Seamless, accurate identity verification isn't a compliance cost. It's a growth strategy.
